How effective print PPI is calculated

Width PPI equals image pixel width divided by print width in inches. Height PPI uses the same formula. The lower of those two values limits usable detail because one dimension will run out of source pixels first.

DPI and PPI are related but not identical

PPI describes pixels from the source image per printed inch. Printer DPI describes physical ink or toner dots and is normally higher because many device dots reproduce one image pixel. This tool evaluates source-image density, not the printer's advertised hardware DPI.
